What To Do When Your Traffic Is Low - Part I
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Lee_Cole]Lee Cole
Just because we're taking an organized, scientific approach to internet marketing doesn't mean that everything is going to behave and do what we want it to do.
Economic markets are made up of the actions of lots of people. And people are nothing if not unpredictable.
It could easily be that you've done all the right stuff and you're getting only a small trickle of traffic. If this is the case, there are two things I want you to do.
One: You need to check and see if your site is actually indexed by Google. Being indexed means that Google's spiders have visited your site and that Google has included your site in their index, which is essentially a virtual snapshot of the Internet. It's actually Google's index they refer to when you search on a particular keyword phrase, not the Internet itself.
There are a few ways to check this, but my favorite is to go to Google's own Webmaster Tools.
If you get on their Webmaster Tools site, click on the link that says "Use our site status wizard", then you will be taken to an index checker. It's all pretty self-explanatory after that. Just enter the full URL of the site you want to check and Google will return information about whether it's indexed and about the last time their spiders paid the site a visit.
If your site is not indexed, then you might want to manually add it to Google.
Note: just because you manually added your URL doesn't mean your site gets indexed. I manually add all of mine, just for good measure, and I've never had a site not get indexed. So, in my experience this is a good thing to do.
The next thing you want to do is to see where your site appears in the search engine results pages (SERPs, for short). To do that, you go to Google's main search page, and basically type in your keyword phrase into the search window then see where your site is in the rankings.
You'll want to do a few things first, though, to make this process easier.
Google searches return 10 listings per page by default. You can change that. If you'll look just to the right of the search window, you'll see a link "Preferences". Click that and set your number of links per page to 100.
There are two ways to type in keyword phrases into the Google window that we need to discuss. They're called "broad match" and "phrase match".
We'll discuss how to use broad match and phrase match searches to find out how your site is ranked in Part II of this article.
